Surface Finishing Guide
Compare finishing techniques to find the right combination of protection and appearance for your custom wooden products.
Natural (Sanded Smooth)
The wood surface is sanded smooth with no coating applied. The natural grain, color, and texture of the wood are fully visible and tactile. This is the most common finish for products where the wood itself is the main feature — the buyer sees and feels exactly what the wood looks like. Takes branding methods like laser engraving and screen printing well because there is no coating to interfere.

Stain penetrates the wood surface to add color while keeping the grain texture visible. Available in a wide range of tones — walnut, cherry, ebony, mahogany, gray wash, and custom blends. Staining lets you achieve the look of a premium wood species at the cost of a more affordable base material.

Full-coverage paint in matte, satin, or high-gloss. We match any Pantone or custom color. Paint creates a completely uniform surface that hides the wood grain entirely — ideal when your brand color is the priority and the wood serves a structural rather than aesthetic role.

A transparent protective coating — available in clear lacquer or UV-cured — that seals the wood surface against moisture and light scratches while keeping the natural grain fully visible. Available in glossy or matte. UV-cured varnish offers stronger durability for high-traffic retail products. This is the most popular finish when protection is needed without hiding the wood.
Browse varnished products →Charred (Burnt Finish)
The wood surface is lightly burned using a controlled flame, then brushed and sealed. The result is a darkened, textured surface with natural variations — each piece looks unique. This finish originated in Japanese shou sugi ban technique and has become popular for rustic, artisanal, and heritage-branded products.

The wood is intentionally aged through mechanical distressing, chemical treatment, or hand-finishing techniques to create a worn, antique appearance. Popular for heritage brands, vintage-style packaging, and products where an old-world character adds perceived value. Each piece has unique wear patterns.

A natural, food-safe option that penetrates the wood to enhance grain and provide light protection. No synthetic film forms on the surface — the wood feels like wood. Common choices include tung oil and mineral oil. Oil finishes are the standard for cutting boards and food-contact products where synthetic coatings are not acceptable.
