How to Choose the Right Wooden Crate
The crate's intended use determines every design decision. Produce crates need ventilation gaps and moisture-resistant wood. Retail display crates prioritize appearance — smooth sanding, even stain, and visible branding. Gift hamper crates need clean interiors and attractive handle options. For food-contact applications like produce or bakery crates, we recommend unfinished or food-safe oil-finished pine or paulownia. For retail and display, stained and lacquered finishes create a polished appearance that photographs well. For heavy-duty warehouse or agricultural use, oak provides maximum durability.
Cutout handles are the most economical option — they are milled directly into the crate sides during production with no additional parts or labor. Rope handles add a rustic, artisanal character and are comfortable to grip. Metal D-ring or bar handles provide the strongest grip for heavy crates.
